Surgeons are doctors who treat diseases, injuries and other ailments through operations. They are usually responsible for overseeing a team that provides care before, during and after an operation. Many surgeons perform general surgery, while some specialize in certain areas. For example, orthopedic surgeons specialize in surgeries on bones, whereas neurology surgeons focus on surgery related to the brain and nervous system.

The average pay for surgeons ranges $230,000 to over $330,000. The job outlook for this specialty is good, as most medical facilities and institutions can't even find enough medical students to fill spots in residency programs for surgery.
